"How can I clean/shine 1943 steel pennies?"

2007

I take 100 1943 steel pennies I desire to get the gunk off of, and so perhaps buff them up, (and use in refrigerator magnets). Before I get in for whatsoever chemical reactions to clean them I want to "launder" then all dissimilar ways to cut the grease, or whatsoever other kind of superficial stuffs. What would you propose that I use as "lather/detergent"?(If I'thousand going to let them "soak" what'southward a reasonable amount of fourth dimension?) I know I have to accept off oxidation stuff ((rust)afterwards that. What's the best style ? Just buff them (a hand held Dremmel and a wire brush head), some unproblematic "kitchen chemistry" - for instance what? I know for copper pennies a bath in vinegar and salt is supposed to work. But what proportions and corporeality of fourth dimension ? I'd even go for electrolysis (using a vi or 9 volt phone power converter, as was suggested for copper pennies in another respond elsewhere,- though I don't know if it applies to steel pennies. Does it ?) Is doing the electrolysis, a totally different thing, and so a chemical reaction ? Which would be amend ?

Don't soak them; that will only cause corrosion and rust. I'd effort the Dremel [affil. link to info/production on Amazon] (at slowest speed and softest buffing cycle) with something like Soft Scrub [affil. link to info/production on Amazon] on ane.

Try five% ammonium citrate solution(take 1 lit water/50 gm citric acrid+add some ammonia-pH must be iii,5). When object is clean(later x minutes to 12 hours, information technology depends on corporeality of rust) neutralize with five% Baking Soda solution and and then rinse it well.Promise it helps and adept luck!

The 2d respond sound similar at that place's some real chemistry at work. I'm a bit clueless equally to where to start. Ammonium citrate - practise I purchase citric acrid at a drug store or do I have to notice a chemic company, or is information technology at the supermarket at some other name (lemon juice?)? And "some ammonia"_ does one keep some sort of meter in the liquid and keep adding until the meter shows iii.5. Will that be just a few drops ? or a test tube full?)I suppose I but eyeball it until it looks "clean". But should I be stirring it ?Will the solution be getting darket or dingy, or weaker as I go more than and more of the batch done ? Practice I do a few pennies at a time, or the whole lot ? (I suppose I do this all in some sort of drinking glass beeker, or tin it be in anything plastic, e.grand. a two liter soda bottle, and mayhap shake the whole matter, to become both sides of the pennies exposed and speed information technology up ? 5% baking soda - first I'll take to check the box. I'm bold that's the Arm and Hammer Brand in the Supermarket, but how do I get it to 5%? by weight ? with the ph meter again ? Is "rust" only the dark-brown kind or is it any kind of surface coat that's not shiny ? I'k thinking that the baking soda is like the old kind of dark room photo stop or set, and its a quick in and out. Is that more or less it ? then rinse !
Thanks for initital basic instructions but at present I take to become pace by pace, for each solution and "bath". Suggestions ?

Attempt 5% ammonium citrate solution(accept 1 lit water/50 gm citric acid+add some ammonia-pH must be iii, five). When object is clean(subsequently x minutes to 12 hours,it depends on amount of rust) neutralize with 5% baking soda solution and then rinse it well.Promise it helps and practiced luck!

Citric acrid from supermarket is OK.5% baking soda solution=l gm baking soda/ 1 lit water. For pH correction you need pH exam paper or you tin can apply simply citric acid solution(if you call up that pH measuring is complicated).I think that you lot tin piece of work with modest batches of pennies(more controlled variant of process).Hot solution works faster.Remove rust with tootbrush an some precipitated chalk, and repeat process until you retrieve that job is finished. Then neutralize and thats all.Hope it helps(petty bit) and good luck!
